We seek a hands-on architect with extensive background in software development to translate business objectives into a technology vision and articulated architecture. Candidates should have a strong track record of designing and developing multi-tiered web applications that are high quality, scalable, and reliable. We prefer generalists who have driven feature development at every layer of the stack. We have a strong preference for large-scale text search expertise whether at a big search company or through experience customizing systems like Lucene or FAST. Also preferred are candidates with experience in applying NLP and Machine Learning to solving problems for Fortune 500 end-users.

Candidates should have excellent interpersonal skills and a track record of increasing responsibility. Those who are skilled in organizational needs assessment and driving change via consensus will fit in well on our team. Candidates should be able to establish credibility quickly and provide mentorship to team members. We target talented individuals who are resourceful, flexible, and aggressive about learning new things.

We are an Agile development shop. We do test-driven design and rapid iterative development and are looking for a like-minded architect to help us build for the future.

Requirements:
* 10 years work experience with 3+ as an architect
* Experience in large-scale, distributed, web-based applications
* Agile development methodology
* Deep knowledge of Java
* MS or PhD in CS
* Database design and SQL (MySQL a plus)
* Excellent interpersonal and communications skills
* High degree of integrity and drive
* Expertise in Adobe Flex, Flash and Python are nice to have

YOU ARE: an experienced project manager with a strong technical background, fluent in both English and Mandarin Chinese.

WE ARE: Virtual Village is an on-line retailer, sourcing products in China and selling them to the rest of the world. We’re a UK company based in Shanghai. We employ a diverse team dedicated to driving forward our international e-commerce strategy, all based on open source software.

The role is ideal for an experienced Java project manager looking for a challenging and rewarding role. We offer a competitive base salary with additional incentives, 21 days holiday per annum plus other benefits. We provide visa and living permit if required.

In this position you will be responsible for further developing the website and other EPR systems, both from a functional and technical perspective. Your role will involve working closely with the CEO and his management team plus various 3rd party service providers.

Virtual Village uses the opensource Apache OFBiz (http://ofbiz.apache.org) project. We will need you to quickly get up to speed with the OFBiz framework and take an active role in the community to ensure we are using this system to it’s full potential.

As the Java Project Manager you will be responsible for:
Creating and then implementing a development strategy
Managing a team of 7 Chinese Java Developers
Ensuring best practice is followed in all areas of development & testing
Performance and scalability of the website
Liaising with internal stakeholders and 3rd party service providers

To be considered for this position you must have previous project management experience from within a technical/ IT field. In addition to your excellent communication skills, you must have hands-on experience with the following:
Java
SQL
Experience with standard IT best practices such as Prince and ITIL would be a distinct advantage to your application. Plus working experience with Apache’s OFBiz would clearly put you above the crowd.

Strong programming skills are required. At least two years of experience working with real life NL systems is required. A strong research record is a plus. If you have an appetite for adventures in semantic analysis, machine learning, statistics, graph mining, community dynamics or data visualization we have projects that you can participate in. All we ask is that you enjoy collaborating on new analysis techniques, writing code to test ideas and take pride in extracting knowledge from vast amounts of data.

As much as we want to attract good computer science folks, we would be pretty ecstatic to find math oriented people interested in graph analysis or quality statistics; a quantitative social science person interested in working with us on methods for mapping out community participation; or a visual studies person who would like to work on large scale data visualization.
